SMALLPOX VACCINATIONS
In February 2003, all states kicked off the national
smallpox vaccination campaign. In Florida, OPERATION: VACCINATE
FLORIDA, Phase One utilizes all Florida county health departments
to immunize volunteer health department and hospital staff.
Phase Two expands to vaccinate 1st responders, like
Firefighters, Paramedics, and Law Enforcement personnel. Florida
continues to vaccinate these groups on a regular basis.
Smallpox vaccinations for the public may be available in the
future.
WHAT IS SMALLPOX?
Smallpox
is a disease caused by a virus and has been a deadly killer for
centuries. It is a rash-type illness that is in the same family
as chicken pox and herpes but much more serious. It is characterized
by fever, rash all over the body, including the soles of the feet
and palms of the hands, and flu-like symptoms.
WHAT IS SMALLPOX VACCINE?
Actually, smallpox vaccine is not made from smallpox. It is vaccinia
vaccine (a cousin!) but protects against smallpox disease. In
the late 1700's, Edward Jenner discovered that this vaccine worked
against the horrible smallpox and, though it has been refined
over the years, it is a very similar product to what was used
in the distant past.
IF I HAD SMALLPOX VACCINE BEFORE, AM I STILL PROTECTED?
Probably, not. Smallpox vaccine has not been given for school
entry since 1972. International travelers may have received it
as late as 1980 and military into the 80's. Protection wanes over
time so most people don't have enough antibodies left to protect
themselves if an outbreak happens.
