Hepatitis A (food/waterborne)
Tetanus/Diphtheria - one shot within the last 10 years.

Depending on your destination and living conditions, we recommend ADDITIONAL IMMUNIZATIONS as follows:

Typhoid - if you plan to stay in rural areas, use "local" water, or attempt to purify
water. Most large cities have separate sewer/water systems. Bottled beverages
and well cooked food are recommended. Avoid raw foods and ice.

Meningitis - in sub-Saharan Africa from December to June (Mosquito threat).
In other areas that are low socio-economic areas with very dense populations.
Ethiopia has frequent outbreaks - both mosquito borne and respiratory.

Polio - (inactivated) - India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and sub-Saharan Africa continue to
have outbreaks. If you have had one dose as an adult, you do not need to
repeat.

Measles - Recommended for any unvaccinated person who has no definitive history of disease.

Varicella - Chickenpox - highly contagious, most serious in adults. Any
unvaccinated person who has no definitive history of disease.

Japanese Encephalitis - Risk to short-term travelers is low. Principally occurs in rural agricultural locations where flooding irrigation is practiced, usually in temperate regions of China, Japan, Korea, and eastern Russia and all other Southeast Asian countries. Those who will live and work for long periods should consider vaccination.

Rabies - for those who will be in remote areas with little access to medical care,
those who will live for longer periods of time in low-socio economic areas.
Rabies prophylaxis can be delayed for 2 or more weeks after a bite so most
most short term travelers do not routinely take the series.

ISG - Immune Serum Globulin (Gamma Globulin) - not provided for travel
through this clinic. Is not a vaccine and does not cause antibody production.

Malaria - mosquito borne - not a vaccine - pills taken before, during and after
trips to malarial areas, usually rural, forested, jungle, low-lying areas in
Africa, Central and South America, Southeast Asia and all parts of India
(including cities). Must be used in combination with good mosquito control
such as insect repellent, light colored clothing that covers exposed skin,
avoiding the use of fragrances of any kind (including scented deodorants, hair
spray, lotions), and avJune 10, 2008n.
Requires a prescription.

HEPATITIS "A" VACCINE
Must be at least 2 years of age and older to receive this vaccine.
Hepatitis "A" is spread primarily through contaminated food and water. Usually, food handlers are the source. One dose provides one year protection. If a second dose is received at that time, 20 year protection is conferred. Most people have little or no side effects. If you have had the disease, you do not need to receive the vaccine.

Just by eating in restaurants in your own home city you may be exposed to Hepatitis "A", since you cannot monitor the handwashing technique of food handlers. It is a contagious disease that is easily passed from one to person to another by drinking and eating after each other, family kisses, and sharing utensils.

TETANUS/DIPHTHERIA
All adults should have this vaccine every ten (10) years, even if they are not traveling. Children are typically up to date on this vaccine. Tetanus is spread through dirt and soils, even around your own home. It is not a contagious disease, so you cannot "catch" it from someone else. Diphtheria is an upper respiratory disease and spreads through the air from one person to another. One dose lasts for ten (10) years.
