Healthy Homes Program

HEALTHY HOMES is a holistic approach to identifying and eliminating lead and other environmental health hazards from housing, including yard spaces, garages, and porches.  Lead has long been known to be a serious hazard, particularly to babies and young children, but there are many other hazards that are also important to consider.  This program provides education and tools to homeowners, renters, property owners and managers, the building and construction trades, inspectors and code enforcers, as well as social workers and other home visitation programs to help in recognizing potential hazards and how to safely eliminate them.

Healthy Homes focuses primarily on homes built prior to 1978, but all homes have the potential to harbor hazards that can cause or magnify health problems or injuries.  All homes should be well-Maintained, Clean, Dry, properly Ventilated, Chemical and Pest-free, and Safe.

It is estimated that young children spend 80% - 90% of their time inside the home, so it is especially important that these babies and children have the healthiest home environment possible.  Annual costs of environmentally attributable childhood diseases in the United States are approximately $55 billion (lead, neurobehavioral disorders, asthma, and childhood cancer leading the pack).  Additional costs from Asthma care stem from the more than 10 million missed school days per year.
